Hamlet: Act 1 Scene 5 Summary

This is the scene where Hamlet talks to the ghost. As they start talking the ghost tells Hamlet about how the horrors of the after life would literally rip him apart if he knew what they entailed. Then the ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle (the ghosts brother) killed him by pouring poison in his ear. This poison caused his body to go scaly which meant he died a horrible death. The ghost says that is the reason why he is stuck in the horrible after life. He tells Hamlet to go and kill his uncle, but not to harm his mother. The ghost then leaves. Hamlet then tells Horatio and Marcellus to never say anything to anyone ever about what they have seen tonight (and the previous nights). He makes them swear on his sword, while the ghost in the background keeps calling out ‘Swear.’ They then all leave and that is how act one concludes.

Hamlet: Act 1 Scene 4 Summary

This is the scene where Hamlet meets the ghost. As Marcellus, Horatio and Hamlet wait for the ghost to appear, Hamlet tells them about how other countries look down on Denmark because of the way they act (more specifically, loud parties and drunkenness). The ghost then appears and beckons Hamlet forward to follow him. Hamlet tries to follow, but is held back by Marcellus and Horatio as they believe it will lead him to his death or drive him mad. They only let go once Hamlet draws his sword and threatens to turn them into ghosts (he means he would kill them if they held him back once more). Hamlet follows the ghost and then reluctantly, Marcellus and Horatio follow as well.

Hamlet: Act 1 Scene 3 Summary

In this scene, Ophelia is being told by her brother and father to stay away from Hamlet. They try to explain to her that Hamlet has alot more freedom than her as he is the future king so he can do as he pleases. Her father, Polonius, tries to tell her that the love that Hamlet is showing her is just false love. He says it’s because Hamlet is young and he doesn’t know what he is doing. Ophelia doesn’t seem to try and protest about what her father is saying. Finally, Polonius just tells Ophelia to stay away from Hamlet and talk to him less, and again, she doesn’t protest.

Explore the methods Steinbeck uses to demonstrate the effects of isolation on people in Of Mice and Men.

Steinbeck demonstrates and develops characters through the idea of isolation, effects he uses contribute to the development of characters such as loneliness, prejudice, the American dream, broken dreams and relationships between individuals at that time.

“S’pose you had to sit here and read books”. Isolation in this novella is frequent and builds dramatic and frictional relationships between characters. The quote I have used directly demonstrates isolation for the only black character; he is purposely isolated for one reason, the colour of his skin. “This is just a nigger talkin’ an a busted-black nigger so it don’t mean nothing, see?” This indicates that the isolated black man, named ‘Crooks’ has been removed and isolated from the mainly white group for such a large period of time that ‘Crooks’ has lost self-confidence and is beginning to doubt his position and roll at the ranch. This also shows that Crooks has not been able to have a personal conversation with another individual that he lacks the confidence to express his feelings to someone who will understand and capture what he is expressing. Crooks is only expressing his deep thoughts and emotions because the character he is having this conversation with, called ‘Lennie’, is not intelligent enough to contain what he is saying.

Loneliness links with isolation as the isolated characters are seen as the loneliest. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley”. This expresses that Curley’s wife has feelings of loneliness and needs comfort and a relationship with someone other than her husband. She has also been isolated from the group, as she is the only female on the ranch and is seen as a very flirtatious woman who is often described as a ‘Tart’. “A guy needs somebody near him” Crooks is also a character who has been isolated from the group and is openly suffering from loneliness. This shows the link between isolation and loneliness, in which that the characters being isolated are openly expressed as the loneliest. Loneliness is an effect which can dramatically affect the severity of isolation, as if a character is acceptant of being isolated and is not effective emotionally or mentally by this then the feelings towards the isolated character change to a less sympathetic view. Whereas if the character affected is seen as ‘emotionally unstable’ or simply upset then the readers feelings change to a more sympathetic outlook and the severity of the isolation is increased.

“S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunk house and play rummy ‘cause your black”. Prejudice is a very important element that contributes to the demonstration of isolation, as prejudice is the main reason for the isolation of some characters. This quote is a clear example of prejudice as the group at the ranch are ‘prejudging’ the isolated black man ‘Crooks’ mainly for the colour of his skin and not his personality. At that time (1930’s) black people were not seen as part of the society and were separated from the 100% white group. “Seems like they ain’t none of them cares how I gotta live.” Curley’s wife is also suffering from prejudiced as she is a woman and is a very aggressive characters wife so workers at the ranch avoid a relationship with her so that a drama will not occur due to Curley’s jealousy. This is prejudice as they are also ‘Prejudging’ a character without depth knowledge on what she is actually like, her real personality and not just the flirtatious front she puts on to attract attention for a relationship with someone other than Curley to flourish.

“We got a future” Many people during The Great Depression believed in the American dream and dreamt of ‘living of the fat of the land’ but rarely did they achieve it. “We’re gonna have a little house and a couple acres an’ a cow and some pigs and…” These aspirations demonstrated willing isolation between characters as they individuals involved purposely separated themselves in order to keep the secret of them being close to achieving what was seen as the impossible. This isolation is much different from the isolation of the minority, such as Crooks because he is black or Curley’s wife because she is a woman. It is different as there is no evident force being pushed against them to isolate themselves like in the other cases but they are willing to do so. This can rapidly turn into a negative or conflictive situation as keeping such a secret can arouse suspicious. This could also cause isolation as if the other characters became suspicious then they could isolated the suspected characters as they would lose a certain amount of trust towards them.
“Nobody ever gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s all in their head” A lack of determination due to failure is evident. In modern society in America people still believe in the power of the American dream, a recent successful basketball player in America stated that ‘ if you accept the expectations of others, especially negative ones, then you never will change the outcome’. This shows the dream is still alive but in 1930’s as the Great Depression was at its peak the dream slightly faded which caused broken dreams as them failing caused others to lose the enthusiasm to strive for their goal and what they believe in. “ I see “I see hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads” Crooks is clearly a realist and is acceptant of the fact people will not and have not in the past fulfilled the American dream.
“I said what stake you got in this guy? You takin’ his pay away from him?” The relationships between people in 1930’s were emotionless, as people did not want to get attached to someone or even something. A good trustworthy relationship was very rare and if seen, would have been suspected of misleading. In this quote it demonstrates that people who did have such a bond without the ‘strings attached’ such as one individual was claiming the entire wage were always suspected of something. Relationships of that time were strictly work relationships and did not have any emotional attachment. “I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with. Ain’t nothing left for him” If someone or something such as Candy’s dog has no physical purpose then it is seen as no use for anything anymore. The men working at the ranch have no appreciation for the emotional bond Candy has with his dog, they cannot see past the fact the dog is old and withered and will not be able to help with the practically tasks anymore.
John Steinbeck demonstrates isolation in many ways but each effect adds to the severity of isolation.

Steinbeck expresses a extreme level of isolation of any other individual who it not a white male, he expresses the isolation of the only female on the ranch through her husband Curley. Curley is a majorly aggressive and concealed character and Steinbeck uses him as a barrier to isolate his wife. Steinbeck isolates Crook in a very different way, this example of isolation is very direct and the large majority of white males on the ranch express their thoughts of Crooks, who is seen as a “Smelly Nigger’ and is not allowed enter to bunk house.

Belfast Confetti Poem Anthology

Belfast Confetti

Belfast Confetti is quite a strongly written poem. It sound like the author is trying to put you in the middle of a riot where you feel there is no escape from. The poem is about a riot in Belfast in which Protestants used scrap metal objects as missiles in anti-Catholic protests. The Poem tells me that the people in the riots must have been very scared and felt trapped, so this makes me think about how scared people must’ve been in this situation. One of the main quotes from the poem is “And the explosion, an asterisk on the map.” This explains that at some point during the riot there was an explosion that (in a certain sense) shook the map. Ciarán Carson was the Irish poet that wrote this poem. He won the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry award for this poem.

Flag Poem Anthology

Flag

Flag, the poem, had a strong impact on me as I was all about how a simple flag can signify so much. Countries can be torn apart just from a piece of cloth, and countries can unify just from a piece of cloth. The white flag is a symbol of a country surrendering in a war, while a raised British flag means they have won the war. The poem has a strong sound to it, and it also has a strong meaning. The poem explains many different situations, such as; what’s that unfurling on a pole? It’s just a piece of cloth that makes the guts of men grow bold. This is referring to soldiers looking at their nation’s flag, and making them have a strong sense of pride that they are fighting for their country. The poem has five stanzas, each with three lines. The middle line is shorter than the other two lines in the stanza. It is in this form because in old medieval times, flags used to be shaped like this. Some of the strong words in the poem are; bold, unfurling, rising, flying, nation to its knees, makes the guts of men grow bold and there are many more. The author of the poem, John Agard, says that this poem represents how national symbols bind nations together, but also drives people apart. Agard grew up in British Guyana and was taught all about British history, but Guyana was nothing like Britain. This explains why he feels that Flags drive people apart, because he may have been from British Guyana, but he never learned about his own country’s history.

Past Paper Questions

Harper Lee uses details in this passage  to present Miss Maudie’s view of Maycomb by using Atticus as an example. Miss Maudie explains to Jem that, “some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your Father is one of them.” This refers to Atticus being a Lawyer and how it is a unpleasant job because it involves a lot of racism and not many people want to do it. Also she tries to explain that there are good people in Maycomb like herself and Atticus.

Harper Lee shows that a small town like Maycomb has a lot of racism in it and also its quite scary because everybody knows everyone’s business. In Maycomb, the black people are separated from white people because white people think that black people are the inferior race in America in the 1930’s. Another reason why Maycomb is scary is because of people like Bob Ewell. This is because he tries to kill Atticus and almost succeeds if it wasn’t for Boo Radley. In such a small town the news spreads quickly so everybody finds out by morning.

The position of Jem, Scout and Aunt Alexandra in a social class

The position of Jem, Scout and Aunt Alexander in a social class is that they are middle to upper class people. This is because Aunt Alexander is quite posh and she does not want Jem and Scout to mix with lower classes. Also she really wants Scout to become a lady from a very young age. Atticus is a lawyer which is a high profile job and he earns quite a bit of money and so he has a nice house etc. Aunt Alexander is more posh than Atticus but they all still have a high profile in society.

How does Harper Lee use allusion in the Noval

Harper Lee uses allusion in To Kill a Mockingbird when she says the Jews are being locked up like prisoners just because they were Jewish. This is a direct link about how Hitler locked up the Jews for no good reason.  It shows how the Maycomb community can see how prejudice Hitler is but they cannot see that in their own community.
